We have been in this course, for months now, and I can most definitely say that I am happy I took this course online. Taking this course has helped me develop new skills and tools to use in everyday life and in other courses. In online English, we focussed more on discussing the topics we were learning, while in in-class English we focused on more of a writing aspect, with essays. I have decided to complete a persuasive essay, a concept map, a blog, and a website to finish off my portfolio.

Thesis Statement: Perseverance is not giving up on a dream, even when there are obstacles in your way. Cheryl Strayed finds a way to harness her inner strength to overcome them.

I choose to complete a persuasive essay because to prove my thesis statement, I need to show that Cheryl overcame her obstacles. In a persuasive essay, you use emotion to appeal to your audience. I think that this will be the best opinion for my essay because I need to show the audience all the negative things she went through, and how she overcame them. Cheryl proved her perseverance and her ability to overcome obstacles throughout the book. I believe my essay will be strong, because I will have a lot of good points to prove it. Cheryl is an inspirational character that went on this important journey. In the end of the book, Cheryl finishes the Pacific Crest Trail, showing that if you persevere you will succeed in the end.

For the next part of this portfolio, I will be creating my own concept map. I decided to use this method of organization because I think it is an amazing way to explain your thoughts, with colours to add to the organization of the product. The concept map is a creative way to explore the thesis statement, and to express my thoughts.

Next, I will be creating a blog post. I decided to use another blog post, because I think blogging is a great way to put your ideas together, without having to be to formal. Blogging is a better way to write, rather than essays. In a blog, you can truly get to know a person, instead of seeing how they write in APA and MLA format. I will be looking at some ideas to prove my thesis statement.

For my final part, I want to do a website about Cheryl Strayed’s life. I think that it would be a good way to fully understand her, and what she went through. I would look at her childhood, her teen years, and her adult years, and the obstacles she faced in each section. I think that this would be an important aspect to have as it would let me understand what she went through, and what motivated her.
